FAMILY AND COUPLE THERAPY

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy can be an extremely rewarding and productive experience for couples to participate in together. It includes sessions spent learning about each individual partner in the relationship, and learning about how the relationship functions. This includes the strengths the couple possesses as well as areas for improvement or areas where functioning could use a tune-up. Much like individual therapy, couples can have very specific goals for therapy or their goals can be very broad. Some couples want to work through an experience of infidelity in the relationship. Other couples want to learn more healthy ways of resolving conflict. No matter what your hopes are going into couples therapy, the therapist can assist you and your partner in expressing your feelings more productively, discussing issues in a safe and supportive environment, and providing tools to assist partners in better resolving conflict and moving through challenges. The therapist can work with the couple to increase things like understanding, affection, respect, and intimacy which helps the couple to feel more connected to one another. Our therapists use a variety of techniques to assist in these processes including but not limited to Gottman, Imago, Reflective listening, Emotionally Focused therapy and Narrative therapy.

Family Therapy

Similar to couples therapy, family therapy includes a process of better understanding each individual member of the family and learning how the system works as a whole. Family therapy looks at the family like a functioning system (think a car or another machine where all the parts are necessary and required for functioning, but all the parts possess potential to function better together). The therapist's role in family therapy is to nurture change and development of the system by assisting with building communication tools, resolving conflict, and creating new patterns and pathways for conflict resolution. Goals of family therapy generally look like improving communication between members and helping families to better resolve conflict between one or more members of the family.
