MEET SHAWNEKQUIA

It fulfills my whole-being to do work that is beyond myself each day. After experiencing my own traumatic event early in life, I found my way to the field of psychotherapy. It is with great intention that my clients feel welcomed and not judged, and through our sessions, are able to gain a better understanding of themselves through increased self-awareness.

I’m no different from any other human-being: I’ve had my share fair of life challenges that left me feeling at my lowest and defeated, and experiences that led me to better versions of myself. We all have our own story, but the challenges we face, and the stories we share, make us more alike than different. In the words of one of my favorite authors, Iyanla Vanzant, “When you stand and share your story in an empowering way, your story will heal you and your story will heal somebody else.”

I am consistently growing and evolving just like you, which means I am learning and applying the very things that I teach clients in therapy. I’m passionate about personal development and growth, and strongly believe that how I show up for myself reflects in how I show up for others. My life mission is to show up 100% for myself in every moment and I strongly encourage others to do the same.

WHO I HELP?

As a therapist, it is important for me to able to see beyond a person’s wounds and defenses, so that they are more likely to discover their true nature. I understand that overcoming obstacles and healing can be very challenging work, and my role is to assist in removing any barriers that prohibit my client’s journey towards healing.

I specialize in treating individuals with racial identity and social injustice issues, those living with severe anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. I work with individuals reeling from workplace burnout and stress, those who are struggling to create and maintain healthy relationships. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with adults who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

When you work with me, you can expect transparency. I love transparency — it is an centralize base for building relationships. Therapy is scary because it requires for one to be vulnerable and open to a stranger that one has never met before. Therefore, you can expect for me to be transparent with you, as well, to help bridge that relational gap.

You can also expect an integrated therapy approach, I use elements from various methods which include motivational interviewing, CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy, and various techniques to move beyond self-esteem issues.

Staying informed about the newest therapeutic tools and techniques is extremely important to my professional growth and development. I regularly attend training courses, conferences, and continue to learn and incorporate new skills in my practice.

When I am not at AMW then you will find me?

Out on the town trying new activities. I love to travel, going on vacations and walking on various trails is my favorite forms of self-care. I love spending time with my partner, family, and friends. I am being occupy by my fur-baby who is Shih-Tzu/Bichon mix, who blew up my world two years ago with his daily snuggles and wags ever since!
